A children's book story that appears in Volume 14 written by Chitose, Shindou's mum. It's a Meaningful Analogy. It's sad but kind of sweet and I thought I'd try translating it for a project I'm possibly doing.

Uru's name

sryibrokedit: (nothing can change what you mean to me)
Happy Cafe is one of those canons where characters' names (usually) mean something, and it gets brought up sometimes. Uru's family, especially, has this kind of mantra/motto: "Your name is something given to you by your parents and is the second most important thing after your body/life," and they're very serious when people are embarrassed by their own name or when they insult other people's names.

Uru's name was chosen by her father, who had passed away when she was young i.e. way before the start of the manga, but I've been puzzling over the meaning of it for a while because the kanji is one of those that can mean a number of things.

HAPPY CAFE IS OUT IN ENGLISH and you can already preorder the second volume. Looks like they're going to be releasing them every three months, so assuming Tokyopop sticks with it, we'll get all 15 volumes in about three years, give or take.

Having read it myself, I can safely say that it is ... readable! To my surprise, but then I haven't read Tokyopop releases in a while. 8D; But while I think some of their phrasing is a bit outdated, their translation is pretty much spot on and maintains the essence of the original - in fact, it's so close to the original that I think some people might have trouble understanding some of the references. They're a bit inconsistent with translating sound effects (I have no idea why), but I don't know how much that would bother someone who doesn't read Japanese. In terms of quality, I still prefer the Aerandria/Intercross scanlations (which have stopped now due to licensing) but I can't deny that Tokyopop didn't do a good job this time. Plus they're waaaaay better than the casual scanlators who have picked it up, as grateful as I am for their efforts.

But my FAVOURITE THING about it, you're not going to believe this )

TL;DR I'm so very happy with the English version and will now insist that people read it. READ IT. I won't say it's not generic shoujo because it pretty much is but it's really cute. ;~; If it helps: the art gets better, I swear. And although it's under "romance comedy" and ignoring the words "find true love" in the English blurb, the goal of the story is not about Getting The Guy.
sryibrokedit: (will you do the caramelldansen with me?)
I'm under the impression that someone might be speed-scanlating chapters from Uru's canon because some have popped up at MangaFox. The quality is low, but it's better than nothing if you can't read the raws and can stomach slightly awkward English and missing dialogue. Enjoy!

(But stay away from the threads, because, uh, you know! People debating the mental stability of characters in a relatively light and fluffy shoujo manga.)

canon news

I read about this somewhere last year but had yet to see it announced on a reliable source until now.

TOKYOPOP HAS LICENSED SK3C. This will either end very well or very badly. The first volume is due in January 2010. It seems like they will be going with the name Happy Cafe, like some of the other translations that exist out there. At least it'll be easier to refer to from now on.

... Sob this probably means that scanlations are going to stop sometime in the future. T_T

ETA: ... Also wait, what, my adorable canon is ending soon in Japan. Noooooooo ;A;

more raws!

sryibrokedit: (it's a beautiful day)

There may be new icons shortly when I'm not suffering from headaches and aching everywhere UHUHU.
sryibrokedit: (let's wake up the princess!)
Before I forget again - I found out recently through Baka-Updates Manga that the mangaka for Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume has done several one-shots which haven't been published along with SK3C. Now, raws for Uru's canon are already hard to find, so chances of finding these one-shots are even worse. I wish people would scan Hana to Yume indiscriminately like JUMP. 8( Anyway, if anyone - anyone manages to find any scans of the following and is willing to give them to me, I will love you forever.

* Ahiru Kakumei
* Aisatsu no Tobira
* Gokujou Sweet
* Happy Honey
* Orenji Tenshi (this is the most recent one and how I found out that she publishes other one-shots occasionally)
* Ramune Bannouyaku

P.S.: I. I'm so amused Baka-Updates categorised SK3C under "harem".
sryibrokedit: (hmm? HMM??)
The plan had been to upload them myself because the place where I got them from has gone friends-locked - I might still do that in the future anyway - but I found them elsewhere, so IN THE MEANTIME, get your raws of volumes 1 to 9 from Crazy's Manga. Files should range from about 55 MB to maybe 80?

And then come glee with me because god does this series need more fans.

Scanlation of Shiawase chapter 16 is ooout and it's the cute little lost boy chapter, yaaay~

(He appears again maaaaany chapters later; I swear I'll upload those raws eventually!)

Name: Uru Takamura
Age: 16
Eyes: brown
Hair: brown
Height: 154 cm / 5' 1"
Weight: N/A
Bloodtype: N/A
Physical traits: She's canonically mistaken for a primary/elementary school kid, so feel free to think she's younger than she actually is.

What's okay to mention around her: Probably anything. I'd say no spoilers but her canon is kind of the slice-of-life kind and also obscure.

Abilities: Despite her size, she is very strong, and either she forgets this sometimes or she's clumsy. It's enough that she can break dishes, shake a painting off the wall if she hits it hard enough, form cracks on the floor if she slips, or sprain a person's arm if she falls on them (that last one might've happened to anyone, but you get the idea).

Secrets: I think her only secret is that she keeps a photo of her dad in her wallet(?); she doesn't show it to many people.

Note to psychics: ... Uuuuh, human? And a relatively cheerful one! She wants to be your friend. :D

Hugging/kissing/other non-violent physical contact: Hugs are okay. Kissing on the cheek is fine, but not lip-to-lip. She's probably get too embarrassed and shove you away first, meaning you'd probably hit the wall or the floor really had.

Fighting: ... Uuuh, may get back to you on that. But why would you want to fight her anyway, she's so cute. 8(

Can I shapeshift/bodyswitch/spit at/step on/etc?: For once, I say SURE WHY NOT. Her canon has slaptick comedy anyway.

Maim/murder/death: No plz.

Cooking: Fails at anything except rice, but she's been learning a thing or two from her friends, so she can sort of make muffins and rock candy and cookies. She probably needs to be supervised though, as she tends to need reminders of controlling her strength, or someone to catch the batter when she tries to stir too hard. 8D

Character: Uru Takamura
Series: Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume/Happy Café
Character age: 16

Canon: Café Bonheur is a moderately popular coffee shop with a small, ragtag group of workers, including the yakuza-like "demon king" of a pastry chef Shindou (whose first name is disclosed on pain of death) and the deadpan Ichirou Nishigawa, who falls asleep when he's hungry. The newest member of the team and the heroine/narrator of our story is Uru Takamura, who recently moved out of home after mistakenly believing herself to be a burden for her newly remarried mother and stepfather, and became drawn to the café as a place "where even she can make someone happy". A energetic and friendly girl, full of smiles and wearing her heart on her sleeve, Uru quickly finds a niche in her new part-time job and brings to it a certain life that her generally unsmiling colleagues lack.

Tiny while being unusually strong, and something of a childish tomboy, Uru is also loud, excitable and not all that bright. As a "people-loving person", she is always eager to help others with their problems while having a tendency to bottle up her own. That's not to say she doesn't get irritated or lose her temper sometimes though, because she does, just usually at the defense of others. Optimistic almost to a fault, she barrels through life with infectious enthusiasm, passion and the delicacy of an elephant. Uru also has an earnest, often very loud appreciation of sweets and cakes and other delicious things, possibly because she usually fails at cooking anything more difficult than rice.

Sample Post:

Hello everyone! I'm Uru Takamura and I am filling in for Raggh-san's "Happy Fun Cooking Hour with Humans" today! Originally it was going to be the both of us, except I, erm, accidentally knocked into him and he kind of fell to pieces! I really don't know my own strength sometimes, ahaha ... I didn't feel right about continuing without him, but he was really worried about his audience and viewers though, and he insisted that the show must go on, so here I am. I'll try to do my best! Oh, and don't worry, folks: Raggh-san's being looked after and I'm sure he'll be back in no time! You should all send him some cards or messages to cheer him up. I mean, who knows? They might help to speed up his recovery, and wouldn't that be great!

Oh, I know! I'm going to show you all how to make a simple vanilla cake, and then maybe some of you can send one to him! You'd be surprised how just a bite of cake can bring a smile to someone's face! Also, this is something that one of my co-workers taught me, so it's bound to turn out delicious. ♥ ... E-Eh? What are those groans for? Hey, it's true! Shindou-san's cakes are always amazing, and anyway, how can you not like cake!? ... What do you mean by "braisin"? Oh, I get it: you guys must like raisins a lot, huh! Well, it is possible to add raisins to this recipe, you know, or some other fruit or chocolate. Lots of things go with vanilla, so don't be so quick to judge!

Anyway, now that I have your attention again, let's get to it, shall we? The oven's already been set, as you can see, as has this pan here. That means we just have to mix the ingredients! Okay, you can do this, Uru! Control! First we mix the sugar and butter together in a medium-sized bowl like this until they form a cream ... Perfect! Next is the two eggs. Carefully now; that's one, and that's-- OW! Hey, you, the toucan up the back! What's the big idea! We don't need extra eggs, especially not on me, thank you very much! Now kindly stop being a nuisance please.

Sorry about that! Where were we? After we beat in the eggs, we add the rest: that's vanilla, flour, baking powder and milk. That's it! I told you it was easy. Now we just mix everything together until we have our batter-- Look, Toucan-san, what is your problem!? What's the point of shouting "batter" over and over again when we're already at that stage! And what is that music? Oh, you just wait, once this is over, I'll take a swing at you SO WOULD YOU JUST STOP LAUGHING, YOU JERK!!

... Oooooooh crap, oops, aha. Ha. HaaaaaAAAAH TOUCAN-SAN ARE YOU OKAY!?! T-That batter didn't hurt too much, did it? Oh my god your wing is broken isn't it. We need to get you to a doctor -- o-or maybe a vet right away!! Can someone give me a hand instead of yelling "fowl", please!?
